2004 SKATING Magazine Readers Choice Award

2004 SKATING Magazine Readers Choice Award 2004 World and U.S. silver medalist Sasha Cohen and 2004 U.S. synchronized skating champions The Haydenettes tied for the 2004 honor of SKATING magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for Skater of the Year.

The race for the 2004 Readers’ Choice Award yielded two firsts in the history of the contest - the first tie and the first synchronized team win.

Cohen medaled in every event in which she competed in the 2003-2004 season. She won five gold medals, including her first Smart Ones Skate America title. Her three silver medals included her third silver at the State Farm U.S. Championships and her first at the World Figure Skating Championships. Cohen also added a bronze at December’s International Figure Skating Challenge.

The Haydenettes continued their reign at the top of U.S. synchronized skating in 2003-2004, winning their 14th U.S. title. During the past season, the Haydenettes also won a silver medal at the Neuchatel Trophy competition and finished just out of medal contention at the World Synchronized Skating Championships taking fourth place.

Cohen and the Haydenettes will each receive the Readers’ Choice Award at presentations later this year.

The full title of the award is the “Reader’s Choice Skater of the Year, Michelle Kwan Trophy.” In 2003 Johnny Weir, 2004 U.S. ice dancing champions Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto, and 2004 U.S. synchronized skating silver medalists The Crystallettes.

Each spring SKATING readers are asked to vote for the eligible skater in any discipline that they believe is most deserving of the award, based on the accomplishments of the past season. The Michelle Kwan Trophy, which represents both the sport of figure skating and SKATING magazine, is a one-of-a-kind crystal sculpture designed by Crystal Signatures of Pennsylvania.
